| Richard II by William Shakespeare |
|
Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 7 p.m.
"Let us sit upon the ground and tell sad stories of the death of kings."
The Next Stage Ensemble of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey present Richard II, a poignant and poetic play about English history. It contains some of Shakespeare's most impassioned descriptions of his homeland ("this earth, this realm, this England") but is also the deeply relevant tale of one man's inner struggle between his essential humanity and the absolute power of his office. Although rarely produced, Richard II perfectly demonstrates the Bard's ability to marry gripping political history to haunting, insightful poetry.
Recommended for ages 12 and up. Approximate running time: 1 hour.
This program is sponsored in part by a donation from the Long Valley Woman's Club.
